The threat to the waves at Crab Island from the proposed harbour at Doolin is a very real possibility. It's difficult to show the importance or value of surfing and the quality of these waves to non-surfers.

This report illustrates the economic importance of surfing to this area.

Surfing In Clare: Two High Quality Radio Documentaries

Conan Brophy of Raidio Corca Baiscinn has produced two excellent surfing documentaries; the first gives a general view of surfing in Clare while the second focuses on big wave surfing at Aileens and Riley's. The documentaries include interviews with some of the top surfers in Ireland and are professionally produced with narration, ambiance and music.

This first documentary focuses on surfing in Co. Clare; giving an insight into how it has developed over the years and asks the question what makes Clare so attractive for surfers?

Interviewees include John McCarthy, Tom Buckley, Neil Cooney (Myself) along with many more.

Waves of Consequence Prog. 2



The second documentary focuses on big wave surfing with particular attention given to surfing at Aileens and Riley's. This programme gives you an insight into some of Ireland's top surfers such as Fergal Smith and John McCarthy and the ever popular photographer and founder of Rileys; Mickey Smith. Get up close and personal with those that discover, surf and push the limits at these top waves.

These documentaries were made by Conan Brophy for Raidio Corca Baiscinn in association with the Broadcasting Authority of Irelands Sound & Vision Fund.
